Can I hire a maid in Singapore?

If you are a Singapore Citizen or hold a Singapore PR, you are eligible to hire a maid. For foreigners who wish to hire domestic help, they will have to provide proof of their valid employment pass.

Is it possible to know the work history of the caretakers?

There are two ways to check the employment history of caretakers.

  1. Log onto WP online, choose the enquire option and select the “FW/FDW Employment History”
  2. You can enquire about your specific caretaker through an employment agency.

Can an unemployed person hire a maid?

You can still hire a maid in Singapore in spite of being unemployed if you have a fixed deposit of at least SG$50,000 in your bank account before you initiate the work permit application.

How long does it take for the Work Permit to get approved?

Below are the steps to get the Work Permit for your maid.

  1. Application
    You have to submit the application to the MOM with all the necessary documents on behalf of your maid.
  2. Processing & Approval
    The MOM takes around 7 days for the processing of an application. You’ll be notified if the Work Permit is accepted or rejected.
  3. Appeal
    If the Work Permit application is rejected, you can go for an Appeal. It can take around 14 days for your appeal to be accepted and verified for the approval of the Work Permit.

Can I hire a maid on a part-time basis?

No. Based on the Work Permit conditions, a maid or a domestic helper is only allowed to work for her employer whose address is specified in the Work Permit. It is an offence by law for a domestic helper to be hired on a part-time basis with or without the consent of her employer.

What are the requirements in terms of medical care?

A medical examination is required for the approval of your maid’s Work Permit. Once the maid starts working for her employer, regular medical screening is required every 6 months(6ME) and all the related expenses must be covered by the employer.
Pregnancy and infectious diseases like TB, HIV and syphilis are tested during these medical screenings and must be certified by a Singapore-registered doctor.

Does my maid require a security bond?

A security bond is a payment to the government for situations where the helper or the employer breaks the law. You will have to get a security bond for all your maids except for Malaysians from a bank or an insurance company. The amount will be $5000 for each maid you hire.

What are the procedures to send my maid back home?

It is mandatory for the employer to take initiative in a number of things before they can send their maid back home.

  1. Ensure that all employment issues are resolved and there are no pending payments.
  2. She must have a valid passport.
  3. Transit arrangement and allowance should be discussed and agreed upon by both the employer and the employee in writing before buying an air ticket.
  4. The expense of air tickets and transport to the maid’s hometown must be borne by the employer. The ticket must be booked within 2 weeks of her Work Permit cancellation.

How can I transfer my maid to another residence through your agency?

You can contact our agency through the details on our website and we will get in touch with you. Once the Work Permit is cancelled, we will screen her based on the requirements of our clients.
We will be completely responsible for the well-being of your maid until we find her a new employer in Singapore.

What are the mandatory insurances that I need to take for my caretaker?

Medical insurance with a coverage of at least $15,000 per year and personal accident insurance of at least $60,000 per year is required to be purchased for your caretaker before she arrives in Singapore.

When will I be discharged from the security bond?

Security bond liability for a maid will only be discharged once the employer meets the conditions below.

  1. The Work Permit of your maid has been cancelled.
  2. Your maid has reached home
  3. There is no record of any violation of conditions specified for the bond.

The employer is usually discharged from the security bond in a span of 7 days after the maid has left Singapore.

Can I get a short Work Permit extension for my maid?

You are eligible for a 4-week short Work Permit extension in the following scenarios –

  1. If you require more time to renew the Work Permit, especially in cases where your maid is awaiting her new passport.
  2. If you want to cancel the Work Permit but prefer to keep your maid for a short period beyond the Work permit expiration date.

What is the minimum wage I can get being a maid?

The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) has not made a certain amount as minimum wage, instead, they prefer the market demand to determine the salary of the maid.

Is this a licensed MOM maid agency?

Yes, we are licensed under the Ministry of Manpower with Employment Agency Licence Number 22C0912. You can check it on the MOM official website.

Will I have a copy of the employment contract?

According to the law, the employee and the employer must be given a copy of the signed employment contract. So you will be provided with a copy of the contract in a language that you understand.

Do first-timers have to pay for the Settling in Programme(SIP)?

No, your employer will cover the expense of Settling in Programme. The SIP for first-time domestic workers starts within 3 days of the completion of Stay Home Notice(SHN) excluding Sunday and Public holidays. This is a one-day programme for inexperienced maids, only after which you will be able to start working for your employer.

Do I have to bear the cost of accommodation and food before being deployed to my employer?

No, we are responsible for providing your basic needs like food, stay and medical treatment as prescribed by the Ministry of Manpower, before deployment.

How can I legally discontinue my duties with my current employer?

All employees in the country regardless of nationality and type of employment can legally terminate their employment contract at any time, given that they serve the notice period specified in the contract or make payment in lieu of notice.

You can contact the Police on 999 or you can get in touch with the MDW helpline at 1800 339 5505 to talk to a MOM official.

Will any assistance be provided after the completion of my current employment?

As your employment agency, we are obliged to support your decision and guide you in whichever way possible. If you wish to go back home or require a transfer of employment, we will help you with the necessary arrangements.

What is the minimum age for maids to be hired in Singapore?

You are required to be at least 23 years old or should have completed at least eight years of formal education.

Will there be rest days of my employment?

Yes, you are entitled to a weekly rest day. However, the number of rest days can be decided upon mutual agreement between the employer and the maid. If your employer wants you to work on your rest day, you will be compensated with at least one day’s wage on top of the monthly salary for every forgone rest day.

Do I have to submit my passport to my employer?

There is no requirement as such. You can keep your passport as it is your identity and will not have to submit it except for verification purposes or passport renewal.

What is work injury compensation?

The Work Injury Compensation Act 2019 helps employees claim compensation in the cases of a work-related injury or occupational diseases without having to take any legal actions.
